Scientific American: Seashells Inspire New Superstrong Glass Composite

I read an article about seashells and strong glass. It explained about how they succeeded in making a new strong glass. Nacre, an iridescent material that lines some seashells, gains strength from its structure. In this research, they used this principle to develop an ultra-strong glass composite material.

The researchers mixed small quantities of hydrocarbon with the acrylic until it interacted with light more like glass does. The result is not only transparent but also 400% stronger and 650% more damage-resistant than the material used in car windshields. To construct these layers, the researchers simply spun their ingredients in a centrifuge.

These will make it possible to make smartphone screens and windshields that use glass with various treatments almost unbreakable. By following a long path and breaking down a lot of the binders, we can create a very strong material.
